Designed in London and crafted in Birmingham UK, J. Adams & Co. manufactures luxury contemporary lighting for residential and commercial spaces. Each piece is made by hand and finished to exacting standards.
We catch up with Gerda Zemblyte, Sales Director for J. Adams & Co. as she discusses her insights into the brand.
What are the design principles that define J. Adams & Co?
Our design principles are defined by a refined aesthetic with highly engineered details, driven by a deep passion for both traditional and contemporary manufacturing processes. Our philosophy embraces a mid-century modern influence, characterised by clean lines and functional forms that emphasise artistry and skill.
We celebrate our core materials of brass and glass by using a diverse range of techniques from traditional craftsmanship to contemporary innovations. This approach allows us to create distinctive pieces that not only capture the essence of timeless design but also stand the test of time. By blending historical influences with modern sensibilities, we produce unique, enduring creations that reflect our commitment to quality and excellence.
How does the company ensure attention to detail in every stage of the production process?
Our factory, located in the heart of Birmingham’s industrial quarter, has over half a century of expertise in metalwork. We seamlessly integrate traditional techniques with modern technology, meticulously overseeing every stage of production, from processing raw materials to assembly and wiring. This comprehensive control allows us to guarantee that each product meets the highest quality standards.
Attention to detail is a fundamental benchmark of our brand. Every aspect is carefully considered to ensure the quality and performance of our products remain at their best for years to come.
How does the company demonstrate its commitment to sustainability?
We pride ourselves on designing and manufacturing lighting in the UK with a focus on longevity. By only using the highest quality materials and best practices, we create authentic products built to last for generations, reducing our environmental impact and distancing ourselves from today’s throwaway culture. Additionally, we operate a repair and refurbish policy, with our team always available to restore any damaged products, further extending the lifespan of our luminaires.
We are also committed to using local materials and a local workforce. Manufacturing all our products at our Birmingham-based metalworks supports the British industry and minimises our reliance on imports. This approach reduces our supply chain’s travel footprint, helping to lower our environmental impact.
We also offset any carbon produced by our workers and all business travel through Ecologi, a programme that funds climate projects and plants a tree for every light sold.
Name your top three favourite J. Adams & Co products and why?
Luna
Luna is one of my favourites due to the incredible skill involved in its creation. Each brass shade is expertly crafted by our master spinner, who meticulously shapes the metal sheet over a mould to create its subtle curvature and form. The shade is then dipped in an oxidising solution to patinate the brass, followed by careful sanding to achieve our signature antique brass finish. This finish not only enhances the aesthetic but also reflects the light beautifully, creating a stunning illumination effect.
Flume
Flume stands out for its versatility and wide applicability. Its elegant design seamlessly fits into a variety of settings, making it a popular choice for a myriad of interior styles.
Orbit
Orbit exemplifies the beauty of simplicity. The materials are the focal point of this design, and the stunning opal shade provides a warm and inviting illumination. The understated elegance of Orbit highlights our commitment to timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship.
