SANIPEX GROUP combined its tile fabrication expertise and exemplary customer service to deliver an exacting brief for the recent renovation of the spa & hammam and pool area at Dubai’s iconic Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa.

The luxury desert retreat and the world’s first Rare Finds hotel and resort underwent an extensive refurbishment, embracing its setting among the dunes and its name that translates as “gateway to the sun”, with a new design language inspired by the ever-shifting tones of the rich, earthy desert.

The project’s designer LW Design had an exact mosaic design in mind that was not readily available. While time was of the essence with a tight turnaround necessary before the location re-opened its doors to guests, there was no room for compromise, and they had the idea of creating a custom mosaic. With the designer collaborating with SANIPEX GROUP – confident that the Group could accommodate with the tight delivery time and budget – they set out to produce a tile of the designers’ dream. The Group’s dedicated Slab Fabrication facility in Jebel Ali, Dubai, gives architects, designers, developers, and contractors the tools to create custom-made designs for any project no matter the scale, to ensure a complete one-of-a-kind finished product.

The challenge was the hotel’s new spa area and oasis-like infinity pool, which now features beautiful mosaic tiling. A total of 250m2 of Urban Space Ivory and Giada tiles were used in combination to create a hypnotically harmonious geometric pattern. The skilled team at SANIPEX GROUP’s Fabrication facility carefully cut the ceramic tiles into small isosceles triangles and squares – totalling up to over an astounding 69,700 pieces – before mixing them together and preparing them on a 20x20cm mesh ready for final supply and installation.

The overall design lends a characteristically contemporary nod to traditional hammam tiles, which lead throughout the serene spa and out, framing the pool area and leading the eye along the space.

Quality bathroom brassware from the Group’s BAGNODESIGN Bristol and M-Line ranges and Bossini shower solutions tie in perfectly with the theme, adding to the overall opulence of the spa.
