An Incubator of Imagination

Museum of the Future will exhibit scientific, technological and innovative advancements predicted for the year 2035. Dubai is known as a forward-thinking, futuristic emirate with daring developments in design and architecture, this iconic structure shaping Dubai’s skyline is a prime example.

Unlike any building seen before, Museum of the Future is somewhat indescribable, the eye shape is original yet to push another boundary the eye is encased with calligraphy. In contrast to the rest of the structure, the void represents our unwritten future. Although the wording is yet to be revealed it is rumoured to be poetry written by Dubai’s ruler – and the Museums initiator – HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

As what one could call a ‘young country’ museums are not known as an integral part of Dubai’s tourism, yet the Museum of the Future is expected to bring 500,000 visitors from outside the UAE per year. In contrast to classic concepts of museums, this futuristic museum will be an immersive and engaging experience.

As you might expect, adorning the façade of a 78m high structure with Arabic inscriptions is no easy feat. The 1,024 panels have been individually designed and fabricated from each other. Shaun Killa, head of architecture firm Killa Design, says the technical demands of the museum made this ‘the most ambitious’ project he has worked on.

“The entire facade system is unitized, which means the structure, the windows, the insulation, and the waterproofing is all one system, that has never been done before.”

Design Originality

Staying true to the name and in line with the future demands in design, the building aims for a LEED Platinum rating and will emphasise sustainability; from its recyclable-yet-robust stainless steel facade to water saving in the washrooms. Full washroom solutions were provided for accessible washrooms complete with infrared touchless mixer taps – which catered to both water saving measures and essential ease of use. The inclusion of touchless products is a growing trend to safe-guard public health and add efficiency in a high-traffic public environments. This design-led product in particular is fitting to the design-originality found throughout the development.
